 LC> Hi everyone!
LC> I am really ignorant on the subject of audible traffic signals. I know
LC> there are some that beep and some that talk. I've never heard either
LC> signal. Does the talking or beeping really interfer with the traffic cues
LC> we use to cross streets? I don't agree with the concept of having the
LC> audible signals because I feel that is patronizing, but I don't know much
 LC> about them.

If that is patronizing, what isbraille watches, and braille clocks,
talking computers, braille elevators, etc. I'm not saying that I
want audible traffic signals, but after all don't they have colored
lights for the sighted, is that patronizing?

They also have some that coocoo. I'v never really been around any
of them either.

               Walter

 HK> Howdy Liz
HK> We have one of them ther gul durn noise making traffic signals right here
HK> in cow Town. There are horns which sit atop the signal and honk when the
HK> signal changes. There are four horns, each pointing 90 degrees to each
HK> other ie. the four compas points. It cost $300 per horn or $1200 per
HK> signal. The city of Fort Worth has no intention of installing any more.
HK> You can find it on McCart across from Tandy Wire & Cable. Maybe you could
HK> interview some of the blinks who work there and then report back to us on
HK> how Cow Town Blinks like honking lights. Lots of luck, Henry

You mean they don't have cows that moo in cow town?

Seriously, I don't think that I would like something that obnoxious, but why couldn't they have a bell that would ding once for one way, and twice for the other way. True, you would have to learn how many dings were for which way, but if you were a traveler in that section, you would know.

Why don't they just make a little box with a speaker and a button that mounts
on the post? The box would say "green" or "red" when the button is pushed.
In fact, the button could just as well be the one that's now used to request a
"walk" signal (we have lots of those in Chicago, don't know about the rest of
the country). When you press the button, the box would announce whether it
was currently OK to cross; if not, it would announce when the change occurs.

This couldn't possibly cost as much as the horn system, it wouldn't be a
distraction, sighted people probably wouldn't even notice it and it could even
be made part of standard traffic signal designs.

Charlie, how nice to see you here! How nice also to see you still
support audible traffic signals. It truly escapes me how any blind
person with conscience can feel otherwise! As I have said on this
echo before, when the sighted folks remove their white lines and traffic
signals which tend to call attention to their "sightedness", I will
withdraw my ardent and sometimes successful pleas for audible traffic
signals. Good to see Mass Commission is coming down on what I consider
to be the right side!

Happy Holidays! DV
