Do others here have the same symptoms ?? The weather here has dropped down into the 40's at night - Buddy says that when the 'cooler' temperatures come - this happens (BUT, it also happens in the middle of the summer -- *I* rememer when he curled up on the couch this summer with a blanket and I was hotter than all get out <grin>). Do > others here have the same symptoms ?? Hiya Jean! Well.....cold weather has been upon us up here in NY state for awhile now. I too suffer from freezing..I mean FREEZING feet and aching ankles. This is a new symptom for me since the injury and surgery on my back. It is much worse this winter than last, also. I have been experimenting with various combinations to try to keep my feet and ankles feeling warmer. Lately I have been doing this.... I put on a pair of ligh weight cotton socks. Then a pair of those fuzzy-ish type socks...kinda like the footies type, but these go up past my ankles. THEN I put on a heavy pair of wool hunting socks that go almost up to my knees. If I am walking about the house, I slip on my bootie slippers that have a great non skid sole. All this I hide under a pair of sweatpants.... or slacks/jeans if I am out and about where sweatpants just don't make the grade. I have found that the layering method works the best for me. Last night, while watching a movie on the VCR, my feet just wouldn't warm up, so I tucked an afghan around my feet and up around my knees. It seemed to catch my body heat and help to warm things up. Hope this helps a bit! Ruthie -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!260!223!Ruthie.Hoffman Internet: Ruthie.Hoffman@f223.n260.z1.fidonet.org

But by golly when the weather turns cold, my feet feel as though there are cold, and so does the bottom. I'd be interested to know if a; nybody out there knows why this should be so. I ahve also been advised to put on stockings, etc. Sometimes I wonder if I shouldn't be looking toward a tropical latitude when winter sets in. I experience the same thing in not being able to regulate my body temperture. It can be 90 degrees and I can be freezing my buns off. On it can be 20 degree and I can feel happy running around with my jacket open. Like Buddy, when I get cold I cover up and try to get warm. Many times this results in me beginning to sweat and getting colder. I find drinking lots of hot tea helps get me warm. I wish I knew the answer to this one. -=joe=- -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!150!140!Joe.Chamberlain Internet: Joe.Chamberlain@f140.n150.z1.fidonet.org

I have had problems with cold lower leg, primarily the left, at just
above the ankle for about eight years. It comes on about Nov/Dec or when
it gets colder. An apt description would be to imagine that someone had
placed a ring of ice around the leg. Most of the time it is a dull ache,
but it can be quite painful. Wearing leggins or long socks does not
help. I have had EXTENSIVE testing done, from nerve conduction, to blood
analysis, to circulatory specialists, to . . . .
Last winter I was on 1600 mg Ibuprofin per day to reduce inflamation
from a pinched nerve or partially herniated disk. It took a while to
recognize it, but the coldness did not return until early Feb when I went
off the Ibuprofin.
My only conclusion is that some NSIADs may allieviate the coldness, or
that the coldness is caused by some sort of inflamation that is brought
on by cold weather. Oh yes, my coldness is more noticable when I am
sitting -- doesn't bother me after lying down for a while.
I didn't mean to lay out my woes, but maybe you can find a thread that
will help.

Ruthie We've done all that PLUS put the heating pad on Buddy's feet (usually under the blanket we've wrapped around his feet and ankles). Buddy says that this helps UNTIL he unwraps his feet from the heating pad .... then he's cold all over again .... It's funny how an injury in your neck and/or back will make your feet and ankles so cold, isn't it ?? I spoke with a friend and he suggested that the feeling of coldness in the hands and feet are common when the body is not getting enough oxygen. With quads, since we have low lung capacity this may be a contributing cause. We LIVE in a tropical latitude (LaBelle, Florida) and Buddy says that doesn't help much <grin> - his feet get cold <freezing> and then he says his ankles start to ache .... (Buddy's injuries are C4,C5,C6 - his spinal injury is an incomplete one). I figure if he has this much trouble in FLORIDA that I could just imagine what you all are going through up in the colder parts of the US. I know a real fun way to stay warm and I'll bet you wouldn't hear any complaints from Buddy either!! <grin> Seriously, I think (In my non-expert opinion) that the cold feet probably have more to do with circulation than anything. I'm not sure how to improve one's circulation, but that might be a place to start looking. Regradless of how they got cold, the real trick is not keeping them warm, but getting them warm. Ten layers of insulation won't help if the feet are already cold. So what I like to do is soak my feet in some nice hot water. This warms the skin up & trigers all sorts of circulation. Then put on some warm socks & I'm set for hours of bliss & warmth. I would love to stay & chat but I'm due in the bathroom for a foot washing. I bet I have the cleanest toes in town!.... oh this is real weird my feet just got warmer while I was composing this letter about taking hot foot baths! Is this like twilight zone or what? Dear Jean and Buddy,
>From reading the messages that I've seen in this post it looks like
your getting good information. I especially agree with Zack and Joe.
The idea of a walker or other assistive device to help keep Buddy from
falling I believe is excellent. I also think that if my message
packet has already left it also had that idea conveyed. If it didn't
it should have. I also think that it might be a good idea as Zack
said to get some additional counseling. The stress levels for the two
of you has to be going through the roof. I know that when these
problems occur with Jeanne that's what we do. It really helps to
sometimes be able to vocalize these problems. I know that the board
helps but sometimes that's not enough. It's better to get help before
rather then too late. I guess that I've gone on long enough.
My best to you and Buddy.
Frank.
