[misc.handicap] Using a NeXT with a mouth stick?

I have a friend who is thinking about buying a NeXT. He is
quadriplegic and types with a mouth stick.

He currently has a PC with a special keyboard driver program that
lets him type shift-chars, ctrl-chars, and alt-chars one key at
a time. (For instance, to type "ctrl-c", he types "ctrl", releases
it, and types "c").

(1) Is such a program for the NeXT available? If so, where can I
get it? sonata.cc.purdue.edu? If not, is it possible for a
smart Unix programmer to write one?

(2) How about the mouse? Is it possible to operate a NeXT without
a mouse? If it is possible, is it livable? Are there any
alternative input devices that can be used with a mouth stick
(e.g. a touch pad of some kind?) Is the NeXT mouse connection
compatible with off-the-shelf IBM PC or Apple Macintosh mouse
    replacements?

I don't normally read these groups so please forgive me if these
questions have been addressed recently. Mail or post answers --
I will summarize any good information I get in mail in about two
weeks (February 20).

Thank you,
