Index Number: 13054 Hi Al, we will be good at the mall as long as the bipeds act well. I am amazed that these people are not stomping on small children. When I was at the mall I met a man and his wife, he was in a manual chair and she was pushing him. They were up against a store wall and couldn't move. They were telling me how hard of a time they were having trying to negotiate around the mall with all the people running into them. I smiled and send No problem, follow me. It was easier for me to clear a path that they could follow to get to the store they wanted. The sound of the motor and a quick glance convinces people that they should move and watch were they are stepping. It is really amazing the difference between traveling in a manual chair and a tricart. The bipeds tend to take more care when they may be the one hurt instead of you. We are plotting another trip next week, but haven't decided exactly where yet. One of the places we would like to go isn't really accessable so we will have to either figure a way around that or something else to do. Hopefully we will have semi decent weather. But we have sorted decided that short of a blizzard we are going anyway. We keep you post on the further advetures of the two wandering women. Index Number: 13059 Pandora, good going on that tricart. Mow them bipeds down. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to take my cane and see what would happen if I twirled it like a sythe. There'd be some runnin' folks then for sure. <grins> When my ex had a dog guide for a short time you should've seen how people paid attention and kept their distance. Index Number: 13061 Your story of the shopping mall and people running over wheelchairs and little children, reminds me of the time Rob was a baby and we were pushing him in a stroller. My husband wanted to put a red flashing light with siren on the stroller, so people would stop running into us. <grin> My girlfriend had twins, and they never had this problem, since people always stopped to look at the twins, especially when we had all 3 babies together, they looked like triplets. <grin> -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!163!223!Julie.More Internet: Julie.More@f223.n163.z1.fidonet.org

Index Number: 13065 Hi Bill, I hadn't thought about that but a dog would be and advantage that way over a cane, exspecially if you taught him to growl as he walked. My tricart doesn't have a horn but a few that I have seen that do have horns have this terrible weak anemic little beep beep beep. One I was getting fitted for my new chair I accidently found the horn button. This thing really blast a nasty sound out. It's one of those sounds that if it catches you by suprise you'd feel like jumping out of your skin. This will add a new form a fun to mall adventures. Index Number: 13262 Hi Julie, he is in public school in what they call middle school and what I call junior high. This school system is a joke. They even have pop machines all over the place. He was very excited a few weeks ago and wanted to go to his first school dance. I tried to explain what school dances were like but I knew still in his head he was thinking more like Christmas or birthday party. He expected to have music, dancing, games, prizes and food. Well he quickly found out that all they do is divide up for the most part by sex and stare at each other. When we had these little events the school would at least have puch and cookies. At his dance they charged the kids $3 and gave them a box of pop corn. After the kids ate that and were thirsty they had to go to the pop machines just to get something to drink. Nice planning on the schools part. We have been fighting with the school board out here forever. Their policy is to just wear everyone down. Index Number: 13303 Hi Bill! In your msg to Pandora Nigh, dated <09 Jan 91 21:04>, it said: BH> You mentioned dogs and wheelschairs, well here's a good one. BH> I was with relatives over the NewYear and they were taking care BH> of the old english sheep dog. Anyway, when I was out on the BH> pavenment with this thing going from one house to the other in my BH> wheelchair, it constantly barked at it and tried to bight the BH> tires!!!! I have found that carrying a "Boater's Emergency Fog-Horn" quite useful in such a situation,It is small, but gives off the sound that you often hear on an 18 wheeler. The Dog usually will not come near you again, even if you want it to.And if you use it in a crowd watch out for a stampede.<grin> __Andy__ -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!138!116.11!Andy.Anderson Internet: Andy.Anderson@p11.f116.n138.z1.fidonet.org

Index Number: 13332 We had the same experience with Beckie. She just turned 10 years old, and wanted to go to a school dance, so we finally agreed. She had a good time, but a lousy time at the next dance, so she has not wanted to go to any more. Good luck fighting with the school board. We had few run ins with them too. Ours is OK for normal kids, with no special problem, but we finally put Rob in a private school. However we found the Carleton School Board much better than the one in Calgary. The one in Calgary was amazing. The more handicap they made a child out to be the better they liked it, because they got more money from the government to educate them. -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!163!223!Julie.More Internet: Julie.More@f223.n163.z1.fidonet.org

Index Number: 13335 Pandora, I see from your post that the schools in your area don't have an awfull lot more smarts than the ones around here. in fact, they sound like the school for the blind that I went to in St. Louis. The whole thing makes me so sad just to think about it. No wonder more and more parents want to be the ones teaching their kids. Index Number: 13619 It has been an on going thing with them, I would have thought that in this day and age that teachers and schools systems would be familiar with hyperactiviy and be able to handle it. We have gone over this with them so much. I even make it a point at the start of a new year to call all of his new teachers and explain the problem, I also ask them to call me back if they have reall heavy problems with him. I have explained that sometimes his medication levels need to be changed and they are the ones that can really see the finesigns of a more loss of attention span. But they don't listen, they don't call and say that Klinton is having a hard time focusing in class they just wait until his report card time and leave little nasty notes. By then for that grading period it is a little to late to have his medication ajusted and to do him any good. The only time that care about it is if they can't keep him seated and then they punish him and just call me to remove him from the school that day, and that's caused by them giving him access to a ton of candy. Normally when his meds are low he just sits and doodles, looks around the room, but will stay seated. I have to laugh, when we first put him into this school system they tried to tell me after a few weeks that they thought he was retarded. I of course blew my top. Took him back to the doctor and we had to up his medication and then he was working fine. For someone that they still occasionaly try and tell me is retarded it is amazing that he tested reading at a 12 grade level in 6th grade and last year one the blue ribbon in the school science fair and went on to the county level and took a blue there. If he hadn't been in the sixth grade at the time he could have gone on to compete on the state and up levels, but they cut off that competion at the 7th grade. Well there is this year and a science project that he is working on and we'll see what he does on a state level. I hope he can keep making them eat their words. -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!157!3!Pandora.Nigh Internet: Pandora.Nigh@f3.n157.z1.fidonet.org

Index Number: 13633 Yeh the school system is something else. When Rob started school in Calgary we started getting the school prepared in May. Well, the first day of school the special ed. supervisor phoned me and said "Mrs More, you have a handicapped child." I said, no kidding, I know that. We got another phone call like that here in Ottawa, when Rob was in Grade 1 and we registerd him in summer french program with the school board. Somebody from the school board phoned me to tell me Rob is disabled. I said I know that and so does the person who coordinates the program, because I talked to him before registering Rob. She was pretty rude on the phone, finally she said she will check and call me back. She called me back within an hour and apologized. -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!163!223!Julie.More Internet: Julie.More@f223.n163.z1.fidonet.org
