Hi Wayne,
This msg is really to Roy Miller replying to his post on
Bitnet that you forwarded to here. Could you please forward this
then back? Thanks...

WR> Fran, after thinking about this for a while, I think that I too
WR> support Jack's position on the question of the desirability of
WR> adding signs for emergency medical situations to Sign Friends.

I think Jack and most of us have changed our minds about it after
a very nice EMT (Rob Carr) from Pittsburgh popped in and told us
how he has used sign with much success with HI patients and how it
HAS made a difference (for the better) in their care. He
described at some length the techniques he uses to insure that
there is no miscommunication and how he also has uses sign to
reassure the patient, put them at ease and make them more
comfortable. Being in a rural setting myself with the ambulance
corps being all-volunteer and hospitals being only minutes away,
little treatment takes place, but in city situations, like the one
Rob Carr serves, this is not the case, so they (the EMT's) DO ask
pertinent questions of the hearing/speaking patients and react
accordingly. Thus it seems reasonable they would want to be able
to provide the same level of care to HI or SI patients as well.

WR> assumption. In such instances, fingerspelling is probably a more
WR> effective communication strategy (and you can reasonably presume
WR> that anyone who signs also fingerspells).

Rob did say he also DOES fingerspell alot (to be sure he's
understood).

I've written 3 chapters already now but have not included VERY
technical words (like diabetes) since I couldn't find them
--probably would fingerspell those.

BTW it was some time ago that you had your secretary write me and
request a copy of Sign Friends. If you or your University would
register it, you would then be entitled to an update. Excluding
the EMT words (as they're not released yet) it currently includes
512 words or phrases.

Hi again Jay,

 JC> Diabetes--sign "blood sugar."

Thanks a million for that sign combination that is for diabetes!
For allergy to medicine I did "medicine" + "can't" --would that be
right? Couldn't find allergy anywhere.

Also I saw in one of your other msg's that you're the Episcopal
Chaplain for Gallaudet--that's really neat--didn't realize that.
I King Jordan has been on TV quite a bit lately and he's really a
great spokesperson for the University and for the interests of the
deaf in general--he's also quite charismatic, I think. Must be
exciting to be a part of Gallaudet.

Thanks again for the help with the sign for diabetes.
