[This is from the Silent Talk Conference]

Deaf people have kept to ourselves mainly because mainstream society's
treatment of deaf people conveyed very explicitly that we were "weird",
impediments, "stupid", and other such things that told us to go away
as you aren't welcome. Heck!!! Deaf people educated orally were not
even hired by the very schools that graduated them. If such conditions
exist, what does that tell you? We weren;t welcome despite lip service
to the contrary. Deaf did what any minority group does, if you aren't
welcome (and prejudice communicates just that) tehn you stay among
your own. Don't pointthe finger at ASL or Deaf people. Point it in
the direction that it belongs in. I am sure you know where that is.
