I need some instructions on a procedure to load my wheelchair in the
car behind me. I have driven a van for 6+ years and do not remember the
proper procedure to put the chair behind the front seat on a 2-door car. I
have tried loading it by putting the rear wheels in first and have had
moderate success but seem to have a problem getting the pedals past the
overhead part of the door opening.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Jay, it has been a while for me also, but this is my method. Get in
passanger side, slide seat full forward. Fold chair, and foot pedels,
leave them on. Then trun chair and set pedels on rocker pannel. Slide
to drivers side anf push passanger seat forward. Reach over, lift
pedels up to get the small FRONT wheels up on the rocker pannel. Then
push down on the pedals, while they are still on the pannel to use them
as a leverage point to get main wheels up off aslphalt and pull in t he
chair at the saim time.
The trick is using the pedals for leverage. Good luck. What happened
to your van.
Regards, John

John,

The van has over 128,000 miles on it and has seen better days. In
addition, there are several drawbacks to using a van.
The chair I use has pedals that don't come off - it is similiar to a
Quickie HP - but weighs about 34 lbs. I never thought of getting in the
passenger's side. I'll be able to try that on some of the models but on a
lot of models I can't because they have bucket seats. I'll give ti a try
though.
        Thanks.
Jay

P.S. Did you leave the brakes on the wheel chair on or off while putting it
      in the car?

You have to release the brakes, becouse you want the back wheels to roll
in. and remember you want the peddles on folded forward so they can be
used as leverage. Good luck.
As far as the van, I just sold one with 130k oit and it was running
great. But I admit, the possiblity of a failure had me selling it.

JS> top of me. I decided that since I usually have a passenger with me
JS> that I would stick to putting the chair behind the driver's seat.
What ever you are comfortable with. Some do the same basic method,
except transfer into the drivers side and pull the chair behind the
drivers seat. the advantage is that you don't have to slide as far to
move out of the seat's back way. My best transfer is into the
passanger side and I felt the chair kept me sitting too far forward.
But at least you don't have to have someone to go out driving!
