[This is from the Silent Talk Conference]

Hi Mitch; A while back you had expressed concern re the widely
variable quality of AlSs you encountered and expressed a need for
standardization and certification of systems and system operators.

Last August, SHHH proposed that the Acoustical Society of America
establish a working group to devleop a standard for assistive
listening devices. The Acoustical Society referred the request
to its Accredited Standards Committee S3. S3 drafted a proposed
scope for a work item to develop the standard which states:

"To provide definitions for various types of assistive listening
   devices.

"To determine which assistive listening devices can be measured
acousitcally and to provide standard procedures for acoustic
   measurement."

The work item was placed on a letter ballot which closes March 15.
Chair of committee S3, L. A. Wilber, recommends approval of the
work item. If approved it will be assigned to subcommittee S3/WG81
to be chaired by Rogwr Kasten. Approval is expected.
