Womack
This is Michael P. Ralph, deaf psychologist from philadelphia
graduate of gallaudet, works at Pa School for the Deaf
first time on FidoNet. like your comments pick up on an
interesting relationship be/w you and Ann Stalaker is she the one
responsible for maintaining the silent talk. Am a ASL user however my
native language is english. acquires ASL during my stay at Gallaudet
and South Dakota. Am fluent in both. recognize the needs to permit all
individuals to speak freely without fear. I am more in your camp.
as a school psychologist. i look at the whole deaf child, identify their
strengths, needs, and provide recommendations.I will be partial to ASL as
the primary language for deaf children. My response to those who say that
deaf children learn ASL, but help with acquiring english. Two things,
majority of deaf children are not exposed to ASL competent staff. It
is one thing for an educational program to say they use ASL and another
thing to assess their staff ASL skills secondly, it is education, not
language that promote the acqusition of english skills in reading writing
etc. I will be checking in from time to time. The say thing about the
expression of feelings regarding the ASL, English what have you is based
on emotions, not facts. research is needed. I put my money on ASL and
English being good pen pal. got to go glad i joined adios from Phila
