Hi,

Well, Toby and I have been proud graduates for over three months
now and I have a question. Why does he still keep following me all
over the apartment, everywhere I go for any reason at all.

Unless my mutt is sound asleep, the minute he sees me move, he is
right after me and often he tries to get right in front of me so I
can trip over him!

Are we just a strange team or does everyones guide mutt follow them
where ever they go inside their homes, including the bathroom! Gee
whiz. Even when I take a shower or bath, he wants to get in with
me! In fact, once he even tried to get in the bathtub with my room
mate!

Loyalty is nice, but is it supposed to be this nice? heheheh! Do
you other mutt users experience this same thing?

Keepin' the faith!

. Vixen

Vixen,
Don't worry, cause this is a habit that all newer guide dogs seem
to have. Bad, Bad LeeRoy Lab still follows me around too, but I found
that Strider lost this compulsive behavior after a while. I'm pretty
sure it was around his 12th birthday!

Seriously, you just ain't running into him hard enough! LeeRoy used to
get in my way like this too, and he still does get in the way of other
blind people who are here, but he pretty much has learned to stay clear
of my path when I'm moving and he is following. I figure it is the
combination of me being able to scream louder than most, and because of
the higher number of contacts we have had that he finally learned to
stay out of my way, but finally he did do just that.

That Toby is one lucky pooch, isn't he?

thE FIRST THING THAT CAME TO MY MIND WAS, "I"ll bet she is a new guide
dog owner" because many years ago mine did the same at first. She is 12.
I think thats the way there trained. At first mine wanted to follow me
everywhere the bathroom included. After a while she became more layed
back. Its a time of adjustments for both of you. Give the dog time.
You'll both grow into one.

That is a common problem I think to everyone so get use to it. Mine
always seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. he'll soon learn
to move after a few hard trips in which you land on him.

V> Are we just a strange team?

No just love them and they'll love you to death. I'm not looking foward
to a life without mine even though I'll get another one. The first is
special. that comes from someone who loves his guide dog.

V> Well, Toby and I have been proud graduates for over three months now and I

That is because he loves you, and the longer you have him, the more
he will love you, and the more he will want to be with you. My
wife use to complain that her dog loved other people better than
her, but of course that was not true. However, sometimes he would
come and lay down by me instead of her. But, then they get use to
the whole family, and want to be with any of them.

V> Unless my mutt is sound asleep, the minute he sees me move, he is right

He will learn to get out of your way. That should make you feel good.

A lot of them don't like the water, and they usually draw the line there.

V> Loyalty is nice, but is it supposed to be this nice? heheheh! Do you other
V> mutt users experience this same thing?

From past experience, I would immagine that most due. There would
be something wrong with your relationship if he didn't want to be
with you.

Now, that all of that is out of the way, it is good to see you on
here again. Don't run off, and stay away so long. Now, I better
make sure that I said that right.

One night we had some company who was visiting us, and they had
stayed rather late, and when they left, I ment to say to them, You
all come back, and don't stay away so long. But, I was a little
sleepy, and what came out, was, you all come back, and don't stay
so long next time. I had a little problem trying to correct that.
That is one advantage of putting something in writing, and it can
be checked before sending it out.

               Walter

Hello:

I am not a dog user. Recently because I have become active in the
NFB and because I sell Arkenstones (on the side). I have noticed
that there are differences in dogs. One client's dog was in her
office and would come when wanted at her home her dog ran about the
house and played fetch with my driver. One time in a meeting in a
conference room a dog began waging its tail repeatedly into the
miniblinds. As the blinds are very expensive and I was responsible
for the conduct of the meeting and its participants I had to ask
the dog's owner to move her dog so it wouldn't disrupt the meeting
and/or dammag the blinds. There does seem to be a definate
difference between dogs and/or their owners.
