 VICTORIA UNIVERSITY OF WELLINGTON-NZ ASSOCIATION OF THE DEAF

         NEW ZEALAND SIGN LANGUAGE DICTIONARY PROJECT

Victoria University of Wellington and the New Zealand Association
of the Deaf have established a National Editorial Board for the
purpose of producing an accurate record of the signs used by the
deaf community in New Zealand and publishing the record as a sign
language dictionary.   The project will be based in Wellington
at the English Language Institute and is expected to last for at
least three years.

The Board invites applications from suitably qualified persons
for the position of Managing Editor of the NZSL Dictionary
Project, the position to be taken up after 1 June 1991.

The Board is seeking a person with one or more of the following: 
knowledge of NZSL or a related sign language;  experience in
descriptive linguistics or lexicography;  organizational skills
for working with an advisory panel of deaf people whose first
language may be NZSL, and regional teams of deaf volunteer
workers;  experience of word processing and the use of a computer
with a substantial database;  the ability to supervise the work
of other staff, including editorial assistants, in preparing the
dictionary for publication.

The Managing Editor will be responsible to the National Editorial
Board which is composed of deaf persons appointed by the NZ
Association of the Deaf and representatives of the University.

The salary will be NZ$40,000 per annum.   Applications for half-
