[misc.handicap] Looking for Deaf University

I have a friend who is interested in attending a deaf university
and would like to communicate with someone from such a university
using my account. He is graduating from deaf school (grade 11/12)
this June and may be interested in attending university this or
next fall.

There is supposed to be a deaf university in Washington, D.C., but
we're not sure of the name.

I have seen someone posting in one of the other newsgroups whose
.sig contains the statement that his/her institution is the only
"deaf university in" either "the United States" or "the world".
Perhaps someone knows who this is and could have him/her reply.

[Note from Bill McGarry: The university is Gaullaudet University
in Washington, DC but I'll leave it up to some of the Gaullaudet
staff, students and alumni reading this to answer this letter.]

Thanks for the assistance,
Darrell Broughton

Heyo,

Let's not forget NTID, National Technical Institute For The Deaf, Admitions
Office, 1 Lomb Memorial Drive, Rochester, New York 14623.

It depends on what you want to do, or should I say what your friend wants to
do. I am surprised that the guidance staff at his/her SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
isn't on the ball here. ([soap box mode on] the school building doesn't have
ears which don't work, it's like the blind school that doesn't have windows,
please folks, get this one right! I may not know about ASL, but I *do* know
about English and this blooper really gets to me. [soap box mode off]) If
he/she has taken a college prep course, then the guidance staff should be
working with him/her to help find the right university. Ask your friend to go
to the guidance office at school and let them show him/her the materials on
both universities. I agree that networking with others in order to get
personal experience and/or information is good, but don't overlook the
avenues available where you are. Unless, of course, there aren't any, which
wouldn't surprise me. Nothing surprises me any more. <grin>

Wishing your friend good luck in choosing a university. He/she'd better hussle
if he/she wants to get in this fall, though.

Take care, see you on-line.

Ann P.

Greetings from Gallaudet University. Our claim to fame is we're "the
only acreditted liberal arts university for the deaf in the world".
I've been working here as a computer programmer for the past 13 years,
and although I'm not deaf myself, I've met several students and faculty
members over that time. Anyway, for further details, your friend can
write to:

      Gallaudet University
      Admissions Office
      800 Florida Avenue, N.E.
      Washington, D.C. 20002-3625

Good Luck.
