Index Number: 14730 [This is from the Silent Talk Conference] If you recall, there are two explanations for this. One is that there us a problem in the quality of the input provided by parents and teachers. Is it because parents and teachers accidently delete bound morphemes when they talk to deaf children ( Marmot & Petitto, 1979, Wodlinger-Cohen, 1986, Swisher, 1983). Are deaf children merely copying what they see produced by others? That is a possible argument. A solution to this problem has been proposed. Perhaps teachers and parents should not try to sign MCE and speak English at the same time. If voice is not used, the quality of the sign will improve and there will be fewer deletions. Signing and speaking at the same time may overload the brains capacity and therefore the quality of output is reduced. If a bimodal system of production is avoided by not using one's voice, the signed output should be of better quality ( Marmor & Petitto, 1979). -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!300!14!James.Womack Internet: James.Womack@f14.n300.z1.fidonet.org
