A new, more powerful SRB has been successfully tested by Thiokol Corp., its manufacturer. Fastened horizontally to a platform, it was test fired and shot a plume of smoke for several hundred yards. The new SRB will allow future shuttle flights to carry 3000 pounds more payload. It is 150 feet long, 12 feet in diameter, and packs 1.1 million pounds of solid fuel, burning for 2 minutes.
