I've heard some disgruntled people say Enablig
stole the design of the Romeo, after Mike developed and
refined it, and that they reallydid nthing to make the machine
better. I seriously doubt that assertion, but I thik some folks feel
Enabling is a company to be avoided. But I think I'm going to
trust you on this one!

AH> yOU ARE CORRECT, BUT WHAT DO YA NEED, A PARTS LIST? tHE THING
AH> DOES 80CPS, BOTH SIDES, AND IS MOST LIKELY SIMILAR TO THE
AH> mARATHON/ted600 LINES. i WOULD SUSPECT, BUT CAN'T CONFIRM FROM
AH> PERSONAL INFORMATION, THAT THE UNIT DOES NOT DO GRAPHICS. cALL
AH> THEM AND ASK, THEY'LL SURELY TELL YOU, AND ONE THING THEY CAN'T
AH> SAY WITH ANY SECURITY IS HOW RELIABLE THEY ARE, THEY HAVEN'T
AH> BEEN IN OPERATION LONG ENOUGH YET. bASICALLY THEY ARE
AH> PROBABLLY USING SIMILAR EMBOSSING TECHNOLOGY AS THE tED600 WITH
AH> LESS OF EVERYTHING, ASK AND YOU WILL RECEIVE.

Hi Al; Yes the bookmaker does do graphics and it shuts off the interpoint when
it does.
NO the technology does not even resemble the ted 600. It more closely resembles
that of the romeo or the marathon which are certainly proving themselves to be
winners.
Wehn you consider that years ago 9 out of 10 problems with braille embossers
were mechanical and now that is almost never the case I would say that enabling
is certainly on the right track.
I thik that since Mike Romeo designed the current line of printers or at least
the romeo, that this was the key to the printers success.
Keep in mind that if Maryland computer services had stayed in business they
would have come out with the printer and everyone would be praising them up and
down.
Since Enabling came out with it instead, everyone is treading very carefully
where they are concerned. Blieve I have done business with that company for over
10 years and I don't blaim anyone but I think it is time to give them credit
where it is due and realize that they are now the leading contributor to the
betterment of braille embossing technology and have some great products on the
market at some of the best prices.

Hi Don:
You are correct too. I think Enabling is the most forward seeing
output device maker around, even if they are sort of marketing the
PixelMaster. I don't like TSI for a host of reasons, and have gotten
reasonable responses at all times from Enabling. I like the Romeo
manual, but Jane of course did a wonderful job with the braille
manual--God I can't type tonight, pray to the finger saints. Talk to
 ya.

The PixelMaster may be a device of the past. The other day, B. T. Kimbrough
told me that Howetech is discontinuing the basic PixelMaster printer, so its
days may be numbered.

I have been doing some printing with the BookMaker, and have
started on the manual. The operation is much like the Romeo or
Marathon, the controls that is. The manual is also similar. I
have had no problems. The quality of the braille is very good
and I have printed a few hundred pages without problems. The
machine has two sets of tractors, one set on each side of the
embossing heads. It is possible to just use the first set so
that you do not waste a sheet of paper each time. The paper path
of course isn't as reliable, but the choice is yours.
I will keep you posted.

DM> I understand you can print either single-sidded or interpoint
DM> braille, and you can also print grapics wthout having totrn over
DM> the platen. Now, on the Romeo you can't do this. How is the
DM> BoookMaker desinged so you don't have to manuallyfool around
 DM> with the bar?
DM> Can you adjustthe impact of te embossing head
DM> for various thicknesses of paper, or must you use the awkward
DM> chims, as on te Romeo?

There are no shims on the Braille BookMaker, and no embossing bar to flip. The
paper impact is controlled with the normal Keypad. Graphics mode is chosen with
an escape sequence. It is apparently possible to go in and out of graphics mode
on the same page, to do both braille and graphics.
So, it is possible to do graphics, but it would take some setup.
