SB> hi Bryan: my braille&speak is on the blink. Suddenly it lost its
SB> speech and when I was checking it the battery was fully charged.

I just got one, so I'm new at this, but have you tried turning
it off, pressing 1 2 3 4 5 6-chord and turning it on while
holding the chord?

Mine jammed on me, and I did an I-chord while powering up, not
realizing that I didn't have to use such a strong measure. I
also just found out by scanning the print manual that Even after
I-chord at power-up you can still restore files. 'less I read
something wrong.

Hope this helps.

Does anyone have the new Braille 'n Speak revision? I just got mine
last week and it's fabulous. It now has macro capability which makes
using Braille 'n Speak easier. Many bugs have been fixed and the unit
is quite stable. Blazie Engineering doe have a BBS at (301) 8794027
which will have manuals of their products and message areas for BNS
users.

liz get the interface package when you get your braille'n speak and I'd
get an extra set of tweedle dump cables so you can hear the data
transfers between the computer and the braille'n speak. I used the
braille'n speak during my first couple of months at LSC. It functions
as my backup speech synthesizer. Ask Dean to recommend a screen reader
that can drive it. I know VOS, provox, and jaws can be used with it.
Artic is an entity on to itself and I don't vert can be used with it.
Really, the name of the game is portability.

Patrick,
Just to let you know, Vocal-Eyes also supports the Braille'n Speak.

Lee, as it happens, I keep my punctuation off when using jaws, so I
didn't even hear any inapropriate punctuation at all. Yes, your
thoughts are quite helpfull as one of the big reasons why I want
the braille 'n Speak is that you can have those 20 files open, and
therefore, I can flip from one file to another. You could tell me
however, what you mean by "open" files and what happens to the
files that you don't need. Do you have to erase them or how do you
keep the information in the bns? I was thinking that since I
probably will want to bring my Eureka along with me for use with
its diary function, that I could always put its disk space to use
where storing info that I don't need right away is concerned. What
are your thoughts on this?

Lee, I was talking to Phil over at rehab the other day, and he
wanted to know why the Eureka wouldn't work as well. I told him
that I really felt that the multiple file space is an absolute plus
where the bns is concerned. He then threw something at me that I
had thought about but hadn't thought I could possibly get. He asked
me if I wanted the disk drive. After a moment's thought, I said
that since I could read ibm files with the drive, that maybe it
would be an excellant idea.
What do you know about this?

                        Bill.

Hi Bill,
I have all of the area codes, store numbers and location listings in aa
large file, and I use the "find" command to locate them quickley. I have
all of the extension numbers I need in a file, the procedures for
different tyes of orders in another one. I quite often can find this
information FASTER than my sighted counterparts who must look it up in
print form in a procedure manue'l. They don"t have a find command. HAHA.
AND IT TAKES TIME/// Switching between the files is easy, just do a chord
o and let me correct that, it is the chord f, the file event is o,
fallowed by the file name, go to the top of file whic"h is chord l and do
a chord f and when it asks for text to find give it enough letters in the
first part to make it unique and a chord en sign which is 26 and it will
go to the first time it is used in the file. Without going to the top of
the file, do the same thing if the same word, number, or name you need is
used another time to find the second, third, fourth and so on.
Hope this helps

Hi Bill,
The help file is a list of commands. I think it is helpful. It is all I
had to get started with the machine rehab let metb use before mine came
and I made it work. It dose not give much else. I have a Braille
refference guide and if you would like it I will send it to you.

Hi Bill,
The disk drive will not allow you to run another program, but it will
provide extra storage space and it will ensure that info you collect will
be kept for you even if it is dropped from b and s. In your line of work,
it would be an excellent idea because you wouldn't have to dump it in your
pc each time and wouldn't have to go to your pc to retreave it. I
understand that the drive is compatable with pcs with the proper cablbles.
Haven't gotten envelope large enough for info I am sending will do so in
a day or so.

It's all in the program whice is built in. Alll you need to do is open a
file. When you want to open another file, you exet the current one and
either creat or open the next. The only way do drop a file is to delete
it or let your ateries die, and still you MIGHT be able to recover it.
You can only read one file at a time, unles you are using macros and you
can get them to do almost anything. You can even link them, but you could
creat a loop so be careful with that.
Hope that helps. ......Lee

Not much problem. To change from on file to another, just open or creat
another file. You catt delete a file by leaving it and no need to save
it. That is automatic. The only way to loose it is delete it or let your
bateries die and you might still be able to recover the files. I will
try to put help file in files section.

LB> The braille and speak; is it able to upload more than one file
LB> to the pc, so a person could take note and figures from several
LB> meetings, and put them where they need to go one by one. also,
LB> do you need a comm program like telix to perform these uploads,
LB> or does some kind of auto software come with it.

Hi Louis, Thought I would jump in here as a braille 'n speak user. You
can have up to 30 files in the BNS and they can be uploaded and
downloaded to a PC. You do need some communications program such as
telix which is what I use with it.
LB> A friend of mine has a versabraille 2c and is wanting to get
LB> rid of it and go to the braille and speak. What do you think
LB> of that move. She does not use the VB2 for any communications
LB> or emmulation with anyother computers, just a complicate note
 LB> taker.
As a note taker, the braille 'n speak can't be beat in my opinion. As
you may know from reading messages here, the manual is available from
vibug and blinklink and probably other places. They also have a disk
drive which I haven't seen myself, but I'm sure someone here can tell
you about it if you're interested. Hope this helps.

I put a message on this echo about a week ago, but I'm not sure it
actually got disseminated. If it didn't, or even if it did, I want to
say that I am very glad to have access to this echo, and have enjoyed
reading it for the ast couple weeks. If my message about low-cost
information services didn't make it onto the echo, I'll repost it.
I want to be sure all Braille 'n Speak users know about the Users'
Group. Membership costs $10 per year, but the issues for the first
calendar year in which you own a BNS are free. Blazie Engineering
eventually gives me the names of registered users, but if you want to be
sure I get your name, give it to me personally, here, by phone (206)
685-1818,) or by mail (318 S. Judson St., Tacoma, WA 98444). If you
bought a BNS in 1990 and haven't gotten your issues, let me know that
also, but don't despair. I just received a very large list from Blazie,
and am sending out tapes as fast as I can get them copied.
I have yet to graduate from my old reliable Apple II to the pc
world, though I may do so soon and will have a myriad questions. To
start with, does anybody use Speak-Sys, and if so, is it at all viable
as a screen reader? for the time being, I use BNS for almost
everything, including all telecommunicating. I know there are many
telecommunication nicities it doesn't have, but I find it a very
comfortable environment to use.
Anyway, enough rambling. Bye for now
Dean
