 MB> hi,
MB> I'm curious to know something about echopc: price, speech
MB> quality, software features, phisical characteristics, vendors
MB> and so. I'm interesting to have information in order to
MB> adapt software for italian language or to rewrite it here in
 MB> Italy.

The Echo PC has fair speech quality. I find it easy to understand, although the
speed is on the slow side. It is also difficult for software to control it
cleanly, so it squeals and makes noises some. Finally, it is an external unit
which means that the text to speech algorithm is on-board, so I don't know about
converting to Italian. I know that Dolphin systems has units with forgein
language modules, but I don't know if Italian is one.

MB> Yes, it is; but I'm looking for a cheaper device, that provides slow
 MB> quality
MB> voice and can be useful for beginners that don't want to spend much
 MB> money.

If you can use one with English output, look into the Doubletalk PC from RC
systems. It has a very natural-sounding (as good as Dectalk in my opinion)
voice yet is fast enough for all but the most demanding speed demons. Best of
all, it costs only $279 US.
