SM> In my Chemical Bank (New York City) checking account statement
SM> this month -- Chemical Bank offers its statements in braille by
SM> the way -- there is a notice from the New York Telephone
SM> Company indicating that their customers may now request braille
 SM> bills. ...

Hi, Scott,

One thing more about these Braille phone bills that deserves mentioning.
A couple of us found out recently that only page one of your phone bill
would be in Braille. Page one is the page which indicates your total
amount due and, I believe, any outstanding balance. All subsequent
pages, those containing additional information about individual call
statistics, will not be provided in Braille. From my perspective having
only the first page in Braille is not particularly useful since I still
have to rely on other means of checking the entire bill. In fact I
rarely check over the entire bill just because it's too much of a
hassle. And besides, to get my amount due every month I simply call
customer service and they're more than happy to give me the information.
So until or unless they start providing the entire bill in Braille, I
have no interest in receiving it. Of course, for those who are
interested, they should be aware of what they will and will not be
receiving.

Regards,
--Your Alternative Uncle Sam

Sam, I agree that we should be getting the most important part
of our bills, along with the complete pertinent details of which
calls were made when and what charges levied.

However, I think we should all ask to receive the bills as they
are offering them for now, and keep asking for more once
brailling bills is a firmly established routine. I think we
should all show that we are interested in the program, otherwise
it may seem to NYTEL thatno one's concerned about getting bills.

In my particular case, I don't need it, either because I can get
someone to read it, or can use a lens to read it, or the
arkenstone, but I want them to know that we're out here and ARE
glad to see them doing something to consider ALL their
customers' needs. So I hopped right on the gravey train and
sent my letter of request pronto.  They said it would be coming;
I'm still waiting for it!

New York Telephone has recently introduced
a program which provides braille phone bill s for
blind customers.
At present, the company only produces
the summary of charges, and no itimization pages.
Also, at present the company sends the work out to
a contractor, and the customer has braille about
a week after the printed invoices are sent.
The company plans to do the work in-house,
directly off the main-frame, and include itimization
at some point.
This would be a good idea for the rest of the
country. Does anyone know of other
companies doing something like this?

Mika,

I am in the South florida area, and Southern Bell is doing exatctly the
same here as your phone company is doing there. The bill is a summary,
but I have heard of no plans to expand it to an itemized statement in
the future. Even just the summary however, was nice to have and
definately a big step ;in the right direction. It was nice to open it
up and see my totals without having to ask someone...

Regards,
Rick

Union electric sends out Braille electric bills here in the mid
west. I've never seen one, easier for me to ask Lynn to read it.

DS> I had an interesting one just today. I was in an ice cream
DS> shot with my family and a friend. We had given our orders and
DS> were waiting and I guess the lady must have handed my ice cream
DS> to my friend and I had a little trouble hearing because it was
DS> noisy in there, but I heard her say to my friend: (make her sit
 DS> down".--As if I were a small child instead of a blind adult. I
DS> was very tempted to say as much to the woman, but I didn't. I
 DS> guess I should have.

i thought you were going to tell me that the women
talked through you to your friend totally ignoring you
as though you weren't there or were not only blind but
stupid. thats a common one. now i learned to do
certain things alone so they have to deal with me and
not anyone else. when i'm alone though some of them
ignore you anyway. i laugh on the inside just seeing
how they handle the situation. oh well they'll learn
                 someday.
