Index Number: 14529 [This is from the Silent Talk Conference] The Golden Elites, the only blind and deaf squad ever invited to the National High School Drill Team/Dance Team Championship, returned early Tuesday with the top award in military drill division. They had given a near-perfect performance in the competition Saturday in Orlando, Fla. Three of the five judges gave the Elites a perfect 33 score for their performance; the other two each awarded the team a 30. The 3-foot trophy will be brought back to The Virginia School for the Blind and Deaf in Hampton, VA by the 10 member team and it's director, Donald Cooper. Cooper, formed the team about 2 1/2 years ago and uses a combination of voice and sign language to drill the four girls and six boys. Three of them are blind and seven are deaf. -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!275!429!Warren.King Internet: Warren.King@f429.n275.z1.fidonet.org

Index Number: 14856 [This is from the Blink Talk Conference] Hi Warren: as Principal of the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Hampton, thanks for the very kind words about our drill team. I also am the administrator of the student life Department in which Marc Cooper works. Naturally, I know him and most of the drill team members very well, and we are quite proud of them. You might be interested in knowing that just this week, the State Board of Education is considering as a first review, recommendations to close this school by July 1994, and it has been recommended that we no longer accept admissions to the school beginning July, 1991. Frankly, I don't think this message has gotten to the public schools yet, and if a student is referred to the school, I intend to accepthim/her. After all, what can they do about it? Anyway, thanks again for the kind words about us. -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!377!6!Stew.Bowden Internet: Stew.Bowden@f6.n377.z1.fidonet.org
