The idea you have concerning a big brother or big sister concept for the
blind peaked my interest. I think its a great idea. I know when I was
growing up a mentor would have been helpful. Everyone could learn from
everyone else no matter what the age. Even a 3 year old has something
to say. The little guys and girls can learn a thing or two from us so
called vetrans out in the trenches. there the front line of tomorrow.
I wish you luck with this idea and hope its sucessful its a great idea.

I once tried to volunteer with one of these agencies, for any handicapped
kids they might have as clients. The response? "We don't have/get/accept
handicapped children in our program." A friend of mine had the same
experience. Wonderful *&^%$&ing people! Eh?

I am a member of the NFB (National Federation Of The Blind). One thing
that can happen in the NFB is that blind children can meet role models with the
same handicap as they have. If someone is looking for a big brother/sister
I would suggest trying an organization appropriate to the disability.

Hi Bill,

Thought you might want to know there is a MENTOR program in
Boston for girls with disabilities. They are paired with
independent women with disabilities along the lines of Big
Brother/Big Sister.

I've heard this program has spread to other areas, too. I think
it's a great idea to help kids w/ disabilities (with 0, 1 or 2
parents) grow up with more self-esteem and better role models
than they'll get otherwise.
