Paul, pleased to reply to your request. Guide Dog Users Incorporated
is an affiliate of the American Council of the Blind. Having just
joined it, my information is not great yet but here goes. The
membership fee is $5.00 annually which gets you correspondence by
audio tape or medium of your choice about all activities and
conventions. These tapes are called "Pawtracks" and this is their
periodic magazine as well. Also available for $12.00 annually are
many tapes under the title of "Dog Fancy" which are not originated
by guide dog users but rather are created by veterinarians for the
benefit of all dog users and contain a great deal of information
about dog care and grooming for your benefit. Normally costing much
more to the sighted public, the G.D.U.I has been given exclusive
permission to copy and distribute to the blind at cost as a benefit.
I do not have the usual 4 channel tape equipment that plays at half
speed and they sound like Donald Duck to me so I cannot relate
accurately their contents. The contact is as follows:
Kim Charlston, President,
57 Grandview Avenue,
Watertown, Massechusetts
02172
Correction on her surname, spell it Charlson. Bet I spelled it wrong
when I brailled her also. As my time on this bbs is very limited at
the present, I will keep it short, but will also watch for you on
the Fidonet DisABLED Users Support net which I know that you use
also. More on GDUI later. Also on our guide dog group. Till then,
best wishes in all your endeavours. TTYL

Paul, we had at least three insurance companies brochure re guide
dog insurance but our members did not find it to suit their dogs.
For one thing, any hip dysplasia problems relating to Labs would be
showing in the ages of our dogs, whereas a young and new dog may
have passed the requirements. I am not sure if we still have the
information but if yes, will pass it along. Seems the cost factor
when compared to the benefits did not justify the cost also. Will
check with group members and get back to you. Meanwhile, watch for
posts to Willie Wilson and others as I post information to each of
you trusting that the other will read it also to eliminate duplicate
posting. Talk to you later.
