The Canadian Council of (Christian) Churches has called for assistance to
the "innocent victims of war" in iraq. The churches have sponsored a
newspaper ad urging people to send donations to the International Relief
and Development Foundation, 2-100 McLevin St., Scarborough, Ontario, M1B
2B5. (416) 291 4146.

IRDF is a muslim organization which will bring medicine and other medical
supplies in a convoy from jordan to iraq. I'm sure the disabled
community would want to support this humanitarian effort to assist those
who are suffering because of aggressions, and because of the unrest the
aggression has caused. Many of the victims the christian churches are
concerned about, of course, are disabled.

While the intent of this appeal sounds commendable, one must remember
taht there is no guarantee that any of these supplies will reach
anyone other than the Iraqi Army. Reports smuggled out of Iraq indicate
that the Iraqi Army has confiscated all such supplies from civilian
hospitals in the past.

Sending such supplies by convoy through Jordan, an Iraqi ally during
the recent hostilities and ongoing genocide of the Kurds, does not
inspire confidence.

I cannot help wondering if such an effort might eb more effective if
directed toward the refugee camps in Turkey and Iran which have been
receiving thousands of people fleeing Iraqi gunships.
