I am pleased to be able to announce that I have accepted a new and
exciting job. While it is tough to leave the New Mexico Commission for
the Blind and NEWSLINE for the Blind, the new position has some very
exciting opportunities.
I will serve as the first director of the National Braille and Technology
Center, now being established by the National Federation of the Blind in
Baltimore. It is our intention to make this the premier center to see,
use and evaluate speech technology in this country. Already, before I am
there, the Center ha every braille printer known to mankind, including
two Braill-O units, the Ted 600, Marathon, BookMaker and Romeo from
Enabling, the Thiel, the Otsucki, a Versapoint from TSI, an Index 35, the
Pixelmaster, and a Blazer. I am probably forgetting one. In addition,
there is already a navigator, Braille 'n Speak, Eureka A4, DEC-Talk,
Kurzweil Personal Reader, Panasonic scanner, and various Speaquilizers.
We will be acquiring other scanners, speech software, speech
synthesizers, braille translators etc. I also hope to evaluate various
products, start a BBS etc. I Start work on January 14th.
Hope to see you all there.

Gary, I would like to thank you for the compliment on my talents. However, you
had to get in a shot about following the "party line." Someone will now say
that you were kidding and that I don't have a sense of humor. Maybe so, but I
don't tink so. In my interview, Dr. Jernigan and I talked about computers,
information access and the NFB's role in such etc., not his or my politics. You
and others on the Echo seem to put NFB members down because we all say many of
the same things, and you seem to think this is a bad thing. Maybe if we are all
saying the same things, there is something to them. Despite what people would
like to believe, we are not all brain washed.

David, I think it's been fairly well established by now that Jamal's
case was not an isolated incident. It happened in Boston, it happened
in New Orleans. Who knows where else it's happened and who knows who
next victim is?
You may not require PHYSICAL goose-stepping, but it's certainly there
on a psychological level.
The NFB may feel comfortable with mindless automatons; I prefer people
who think for themselves - even if they disagree with me.

Well just keep pushing and you might just get up front with speech in
one of their computers. It is always amazing to me when an employer
finds out that blind people with computers can really dothe job then
it's like turning over a new page. I remember when I worked for the
Federal Government my boss was so amazed she couldn't believe it. Just
keep on truckin, Bill. Good work brings rewards. Grant
