Index Number: 14985 Last Thursday I attended a convention for the hearing and speech impaired at the Omni hotel on Waterside Dr. in Norfolk. After my little adventure Ive called the City Manager,Mayor,Newspaper, building inspector, etc. It was like this.I get there right, there are no handicapp parking spaces. We ask the manager, and geuss what he said.Oh,we a few 2 blocks down.Im thinking,oh,that does me alot of good. They pay people to park your cars or carry your luggage, but we are nobodys!Wrong, wrong, wrong. If others won't fight for their rights then to bad,but I'm a human being and I expect to be treated like one,not to be pushed up a narrowass luggage ramp like a freakin suitcase, which I'm not,but I have the right to go through them front doors with dignity like anyone else.Do you think the owner would squeeze the President up a luggage ramp? What about our Mayor or Governer?I think not. They are no better than I am.I was concieved like them,I dress everyday like them, whats wrong with me wanting to access a building like any able bodied person.I wish all those without disabilities or that can walk and see what I went through, and its everyday, not just Omni.Let them have to push 2 blocks, scrape there knuckles raw on a luggage ramp. There would be a lot less porsches, and you wouldnt see as many bmw's in this world much less bellhops. We make this world even more convient for the wealthy and less for the not healthy.Who the hell said money dont talk.To be continued. -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!275!429!Joey.Morgan Internet: Joey.Morgan@f429.n275.z1.fidonet.org

I also have attended functions there and have had problems with the accessibility, although I didn't have to go in a seperate entrance. I could manage the steps up to the front door but had extreme difficulty doing so in wet weather because of the composition of sidewalk material, slick as all get out! The hotel was built in recent years when accessibility is a big issue and is owned by a major chain, one would think that OMNI International would have a little concern. It is not surprising tho in Norfolk, I doubt there are half dozen fully accessible office buildings in the entire downtown area! Good luck in your fight with "city hall". -Warren- -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!275!429!Warren.King Internet: Warren.King@f429.n275.z1.fidonet.org
