Online learning programs use telecommunications links to connect students with educational institutions. Through these programs, students are able to complete courses, often for academic credit, entirely from their home or office. Although initially intended for busy professionals, online learning programs are becoming increasingly popular with homebound students. Some of the many programs now available are listed below. AMERICAN OPEN UNIVERSITY The American Open University (AOU) is an online learning resource sponsored by the New York Insititute of Technology. Over 100 online courses are offered in three degree programs. All class activities are conducted online, including student to teacher and student to student interactions. AOU is accessed via Telenet. Six graduate, seven undergraduate, and five certificate programs are offered through the Distance Learning system. Students use GTE's Telenet system to access the University's host computer to receive instruction, turn in class assignments, and interact with their teachers. Costs range from $130 for a one-credit "foundation course" to $465 for a five-credit undergraduate course. All coursework, homework and student-teacher interactions take place online. An initial membership fee of $195 is required; courses cost from $60 to $130 per credit hour.
