Charlotte Elliott was an INVALID during much of her life and is the
author of the famous HYMN: "Just as I am".
The year was 1834 and Miss Elliott was living in Brighton in her
native England. She was forty-five years old and had been a devoted
Christian for many years. Even so, she was plagued with unhappiness
because of her seeming USELESSNESS, for everyone around her was busy
in the service of God. In her extreme depression she was tempted to
doubt the reality of her spiritual life.
Gathering strength and resolve, Charlotte Elliott deliberately wrote
down the reasons for her trust in Christ. The Hymn was that result.
Countless Millions have shared her experience and renewed their
faith over and over through these familiar words:
"Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidd'st me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come! I come!
"Just as I am, and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come! I come!
"Just as I am, though tossed about
With many a conflict, many a doubt,
Fightings and fears within, without,
O lamb of God, I come! I come!
"Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need, in Thee I find,
O Lamb of God, I come! I come!
"Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come! I come!"
Behold the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world, even
the Lord Jesus Christ, Wonderful Saviour. He came unto his own, and
his own received him not. But as many as received HIM, to them gave
he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his
name! Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.
Remember that Jesus is the Lord and trust him for strength in life.
