GD> Is there enough power in the laptalker to handle Word Perfect or
GD> would one have to use a smaller word processor?

Grant,
To tell the truth, I have never used version 5.0 or 5.1 of Word
Perfect with the LapTalker, but I have used versions 4.1 and 4.2. It is
either a 512k ram machine and a 730k ram disk, or a 640k ram and 600k ram
disk, the numbers rounded off to the nearest 50k cause I'm feeling
pretty lazy right now! In other words, depending upon how you configure
the ram, you have between 1.3 and 1.4 megs of disk space to play with,
with the 720k floppy, so it should be possible to run the newer and
larger Word Perfects if desired.

AM> Willie what is the Laptalk? How much does it cost? What
AM> operating system does it use? Would you recommend it as a
 AM> second computer?

Angelo,
The LapTalker is a Toshiba 1000 with an ASP speech board in the
modem slot. It uses Dos version 2.11 which is on rom chips for its
operating system, but you can configure it to boot off the single 720k
floppy to use other versions of Dos should you desire.
So far as cost goes, it is all dependant upon which options you
get with the unit, including things like a ram disk card, speech
program, carrying case and menu system. More information is available
via Automated Functions Inc. at 703-536-7741.
Would I recommend it as a second computer? Well, there are a lot
of laptop alternatives available to us now, but I believe the LapTalker
does deserve a look. The support offered by Ron Morford for his product
is fine, many speech programs can be made to work with the ASP board,
and it is directly supported by Softvert, Vocal-Eyes, TinyTalk and
Flipper. It is quite light in weight and compact, so despite its lack
of many of the features now available with talking laptops, if
portability and price are a consideration, sure I'd recommend it! My
LapTalker functioned nicely for me for a long time as my second
computer.
                                             Willie
