Hi guys! Hmmm.... my accident.... diving. C5-6 incomplete. July
1988. I was at Lyndhurst Spinal Cord Center in Toronto for about 16
months after 3 months of acute care at a General hospital. Lyndhurst
was (is) an interesting place. About 75 beds, all spinal injury. Good
rehab, lots of physios and OT's, couple of gyms, a fair sized rehab
pool (I must say I was a little nervous in the pool at first) and,
naturally, pretty lousy food. Its the regional rehab center in Ontario
and I'm from Toronto so my family and friends were always about. Since
Ontario is bigger than Texas you can imagine how far from home some
folks were. One guy was visiting from Ethiopia when he got hurt so he
was a long way from home. Since everyone was in the same boat it was a
lot easier to relate to the other patients.
I'm doing my BA at U of T and hope to go into Law. That's down
the road a way, however. I've got a van and drive to my classes and its
tricky, but I work it out. It should be interesting when the snow
comes!
What about you guys? What are your plans for getting on with
things (i.e housing, transportation, school, work, etc.). Its a big
mountain to climb but many people have paved the road bofore us.
Sorry, I don't know Elaine but I've only been on this echo
about a month. Anyway, keep pushing and let me know how things are
going.
        Tony.....

Yep. Did the same injury 30 years before you. Took a BS
and MS at the U. of Delaware.

Had my own house for 19 years, but find apartment living
easier and with less responsibilities. Lawns. Roofs.
Driveways. Appliances.

> Right! Even in 1966 there were still no ramps at the
universities and schools. Hotel, transportation, and employment
started in '73.

Well, its a callous thing to say, but, the war in Viet Nam
actually helped (and produced) people in 'chairs. All of a sudden there
were a lot of young men in chairs with something other than their
injuries uniting them.... and they wanted, and fought for, rights and
access. But it sure was an expensive price to pay to help guys like
me.....

I think that Vocal-eyes as compared with Artic is a much better program. The
manual and the program are more user-friendly. The Sounding Board is a very
well-thought-out speech board with all the wonderful features. Vocal-eyes is
quite easy to configure--easier than some. Still like my Jaws, though.

I have also had the opportunity to look at MasterTouch. It seems to me that
with the need for Graphic User Interfaces, we perhaps need a more artificially
intelligent speech program--or a combined artificial intelligence and
configurable program. I do sincerely hope that the companies will work
speedily on making graphic user interface programs more accessible.
