Index Number: 15244 [This is from the Spinal Injury Conference] I am a c-6,c-7,t-1 quad/para who was injured 7 years ago. For 5 years I experienced few problems. Now for the last 2 years I have had back problems. Several MRI's, discograms and an EMG have shown no disc involvement. The pain I feel is primarily on the right side of my back. This is combined with a my right hip looking as though the muscle snapped. The doctors try to tell me this is atrophy. But due to terrible spasticity the tone in both my legs looks almost normal except in the area near my hip. Is it possible to atrophy in one specific muscle and not in others? Or I wonder if the hip and back problem are associated. Doctors- physiatrists, orthopaeds, and neurologists don't have a clue. They just tell me I have a bad back and they don't know why. They have never mentioned scoliosis. I currently wear a firm back brace which seems to help sometimes yet hurt (during transfers) others. I have been told by some docctors to wear the brace whereas others say definitely not. Anybody had any similar experiences or ideas? Anybody had any similar experiences or ideas? I would definitely think that a brace is helpful. When I had my accident 24 years ago almost everyone that had a spinal injury ended up being fitted with a brace. Then it seemed to go to the other extreme and they didn't want to supply them. I have had very little problems with my back and I believe it's because I have always worn a brace. It seems like whenever a quadriplegic doesn't wear a brace they end up with severe scoliosis. Just ask Alan Hess about pain and scoliosis. Best of luck.
