I'm currently using SoundingBoard and love it. But I can tell
you that I started with the Texas Instruments Ti/99/4a speech,
then went to an Apple 2e with good old Echo, and in every case I
found that I struggled in the beginning to understand what the
buggers were saying; in EVERY SINGLE CASE!

first of all willie you should be aware that the audapter out of
the box is radically different than one that has been programed
both with the onboard firm ware and the use of phonims in the
user dictionary. there are things you can do with it to
customize it that I don't begin to understand. I have played
with the firmware a little but left it alone for the most part.
a sign of a quality box is how long your attention span last
while reading a text file or something scanned in by arkenstone.
I found I can read the fidno new letter or other electronic news
letters with more comprehension and less ear fatgue than say the
sounding board or artic. even my old friend echo has less
attention span than say vert or decktalk or audapter.

GD> Question! What advantages do an external synthicizer have over
GD> an internal? I've wundered that for a long time.

Grant, I can think of at least two. First you can easily move it from computer
to computer, should you need too and secondly, you avoid interrupt conflicts
that occur with some equipment. There are of course disadvantages too, cost,
tying up a serial or parallel port and some are sluggish, but different strokes
for different folks.

GD> Is an external sinthicizer slower than the internal ones? Grant

Grant, When you say slower, do you mean speed of speech, or speed of responding
to commands. I guess the answer to both is some are and some are not.
I presume though that you mean speed of response to commands. As you know, some
are notoriously slower, like the DEC-Talk, but they can be improved with
properly written software, such as Flipper or Vocal-Eyes. Some, most notably,
the Audapter from PDS, respond very quickly to commands, faster then some
boards. The Vert Plus, for example, is an internal board and is as slow as
molasses in January, and sounds bad to boot.
Like most things, it depends on how well they are designed.
