 BL> diskete?

Hi Brian,

I don't see anything in the magazine or on the masthead that would
suggest they were available on tape or braille or diskette. They also
don't appear in my 1988 edition of Magazines on Alternative Media.
Seems a shame.

Linda, yes, the Accent does have a user defineable dictionary. I don't
know as yet how to access that, but I do know that it does exist. By
the way, if anyone can give me any direction on this, even to letting
me know what the doc file is that I can read, pleas let me know.

Expression it does have and it is responsive.
This past Thursday we had our technology fare here and Humanware is
introducing a speech program that
1. reads directly from the vidio output thus programs in direct
screenwrite talk toyou directly.
2. The tablet, a tactile screen display which allows the user to run
his or her finger along thelines thus the speech system responds by
reading the actual line. It really does give one a feel for where
things are located on the screen. I should remember the name but I
don't but when it is released it wil make some noise. The system tells
you where windows are located on the screen . It also has many other
options that I didn't have time to look at it. Oh yes, it does have
several different speech modes so that you don't hear everything that
is on the screen if it isn't necessary. For example when using Word
Perfect with this sytem in smart mode it only reads the status line if
when changes take place that the user would need to know.
If you ever have a humanware representative in town, give it a look.

GD>> By the way we did get an
GD>> axcent speech system and it works wonderfully.

WS> I thought that you would like it, and I did not think you
WS> would have any trouble with understanding it. It sure
WS> responds great, and it does talk with a little expression.

I've had my Accent S A for about a year now, and I love the thing. I find
it much easier to understand at high speeds than anything else I have used.
(about the only of the more common synthesizers I have not used are the
Sounding Board and the Audaptor) And the Accent certainly can reach some
incredibly high speeds while remaining comprehensible. For someone who
needs a flexible, responsive and understandable synthesizer, I would never
hesitate to recommend AICom's desktop synthesizer-- the Accent PC and S A.
I have been less satisfied with the Accents for laptops-- the 1200 and
1600, but it is my understanding that at AICom, they're making changes to
the drivers for those which may alter some of the things which I don't care
for. We shall see.

When Rich Lampert was demonstrating the program he was using a Artic
board in a laptop computer so the only part I saw was the screenreader
and the tablet. The screen reader seemed to be quite good. I can't
speak for the speach unit though. I have a demo tape. I'll give it a
listen. One comment that Rich Lampert made however was that one of the
differences between say Vert Plus or Dectalk is that the words tend to
be extended where as their speech system clipsthe words. When you
think back tothe days of the votalker, Walter, it is amazing how far
the screen readers have come but the lower priced speech systems for
the most part sound pretymuch the same. I had the votalker in a
Packard Bell the other day and I sat back and thought "hey that little
votalker isn't all that bad" Grant
One more comment: The Soundingboard though it has the same type speech
as say the Artic 215 board or the Artic Votalker, somehow more
expresion has been put into the speech thus when youhave a period at
the end of a sentence the voice lowers in pitch slightly. I'm really
amazed though that the students who are familiar with talkers want to
be trained on the Soundingboard. Word does get around. Grant

Walter, the Accent I have is a Stand Alone. Accent does make a card for
the Toshiba's but this computer won't take a card because there is no
place for expantion slots.

I made a very serious mistake when I bought it. It is a really cute
little computer, it has a weird keyboard layout, but it really is cute,
and in all fairness it has a whole lot of features. It is a 286
machine. It is faster than my desk top, it has a fourty megabyte drive,
and will handle both low and high density disks.

The reason it is a mistake though is by the time I bought the Accent and
Flipper, I had laid down quite a bit of money. The other problem is
that when I have it set up with a modem, the place becomes a disaster
area. There are cables going here and there-- the power supply, the
Accent, the power supply to the Accent, the connection to the modem, the
power supply to the modem-- I think you get the point.
