Index Number: 15424 [This is from the Silent Talk Conference] John Goodriche-------1764-1786 John Goodriche was an Englishman. He won many awards for his work in astronomy. Goodriche mostly observed three stars. He found out that these three stars varied their luminousity. He figured out why the three stars were doing This. Today, we classify stars as variable stars. Such stars may dima nd brighten periodically due to being eclipsed by a darker companion object or variation in energy output. Pulsars are examples of variable output stars. Goodriche was born deaf. He graduated from the Braidwood School for the Deaf, but he never learned how to speak. When he was a teenager, he went outside every night to observe stars. Many people say that John died from frequent exposure to the cold air. Quite often he was outside even on bitterly cold nights. -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!300!14!James.Womack Internet: James.Womack@f14.n300.z1.fidonet.org
