outSPOKEN
The Talking Macintosh Interface

outSPOKEN is a landmark utility, opening up the Macintosh to the
blind, visually impaired and learning disabled. For people who
cannot see or interpret information on the screen, outSPOKEN is
the only solution that allows full use of the Macintosh. In
fact, outSPOKEN is the first product of its kind to work on any
computer with a pixel based display and a graphic interface. Its
use of the Macintosh's built in speeach synthesizer makes it a
unique software only solution that is both inexpensive and
portable.

With outSPOKEN, a blind user can effectively work with text based
programs such as word processors, spreadsheets and databases,
using simple navigational key commands. A learning disabled user
can read and spell individual words or listen to the flow of
sentences and paragraphs.

Flexible Review

Anything done with the mouse can effectively be done with the
keyboard. The keyboard is used to move sequentially through
information on the screen. Text can be reviewed by letter, word,
or line. The mouse can be used for instant, random access to
anything on the screen. outSPOKEN says whatever is under the
pointer.

Beyond Words

Key commands also navigate the Macintosh's graphic interface -
menus, windows, dialog boxes, and scroll bars. Small graphic
elements like icons or ruler marks can be identified and spoken.
outSPOKEN communicates the structure and content of the entire
display.

Simple and Responsive

The small but powerful repertoire of commands are accessed from
the keyboard's number pad, enabling the user to easily switch
between typing and reviewing. When you issue commands, type or
move the mouse, outSPOKEN stops talking and immediately follows
your actions.
