The shuttle RADIATES heat into space. Stop and think, the sun does not need air between here and there to warm the earth. All bodies with a temperature above absolute zero radiate a "black body" spectrum. I suggest you get a basic physics text such as Halliday & Resnick and look up black body radiation.
