Hi Willie,

You know, it's funny about the word "blink." It never bothered me,
because in new York where I grew up there were lots of us, and we used
the word as a sort of sign of community, or something. It was just
something we called each other in fun, like jerk or something. However,
I have noticed that it shocks some sighted people to hear it. In fact,
when I was getting Blinktalk on Seahunt BBS, the sysop labeled the conference
"blind", not blink.

However, as he and I talked about the conference some, I guess he got
used to me calling it Blinktalk, and when I told him that I would no
longer need him to carry the conference because pitsburgh was now
PCpursuitable, he called it "blink."

have you noticed that some Federationists are offended by the word?

Paula

Well, Willie, I have used the word "blink" in reference to blind
people for many years. It was used by my blind and sighted friends
both, and no one was ever offended by it. So the question really
took me aback.

Most sighted people have no idea that "blink" could have negative
connotations, so why should I worry about it?

Paula, you write: "Have you noticed that some Federationists are
offended by the word?" I would be interested in knowing if it matters
whether ACB or NFB or, for that matter, members of any group should be
deliberately specified in this manner? Does it somehow negate or
explain away the reason people are offended or hurt? What is the
relevance of such a remark? Maybe once we can get beyond this infantile
rivalry, our education of the general public can commence at a much
greater level.
