Hello, My first time to enter your network. Messages show it is a
good place to find info and support. I have Multiple Sclerosis, (no
big deal most of the time) and one of the problems is ttrigeminal
neuralgia. Does anyone out there know about this kind of pain and
what will help besides (or in addition to) tegretol? No nerve cutting
thank you very much. Must be something - it is becoming increasingly
difficult to tolerate. I'll check back for messages. Appreciate any
input. Thanks, Rebecca

Hi Rebecca,

Like you I have MS. My primary symptom was chronic pain compounded
by pain resulting from surgeries.

I periodically get trigeminal neuralgia. I tried tegretol, but
developed a drug sensitivity to it. I think I also tried Dilantin,
but I can't remember if it worked.

I was using self-hypnosis at the time of my first bout, so I was
able to use it when the drugs failed.

For me the trigeminal neuralgia seems to hit several times over a
few days or weeks and then would disappear for years unlike the
continuous neurological pain on the right side of my body. This
pain is like placing my leg or arm in boiling water.

As far as I know the neurological pain is very very rare so don't
get worried about getting it.

Oh yes, as a bit of advice, don't ride a motorcycle. I kissed the
pavement when I had my first bout of trigeminal neuralgia. I was
half way through a turn when some wind hit my cheek.

     Gary
