Well, the ADAPT protesters were at Social Security Admin. HQ again. But
this time instead of blocking most of the doors for 3 hours, they waited
till about 3:15, when the earliest arrivals can leave, and used that time
to block the drive way of a contract building that houses about 4,000.
One probelm is that that was the one and only enterance to the building
and its parking lot. The building houses the disability records and
those that process disability claims. If these guys are not careful, the
disability examiners who look at the medical evidence and determine if
someone is disabled , are going to get some names, or SSNs and say, if
they can do this they can work and take them off the rolls. (JUST
KIDDING FOLKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!) But so far noe one has been arrested. But
they are pushing their luck. This time they kept people from getting to
their kids pickup, second jobs and the like.
Most agree with their position that funds shuld be allowed for those
stuck in a nursing home to have an aid and stay at home. But we are not
even the agency that could control that. That is Health Care Finance
Admin. at the other end of the complex. they were not even effected
today. Wonder what tomorrow will bring?
Regards, John, people are starting to give me dirty looks inside the
buildings! :-)

AH> efficent than forcing people who don't need to be in nursing homes
AH> into them. Why the government prefers to waste money and imprison
AH> people who don't need to be is beyond me. *adh*
Part ofthe problem is that Congress passes a law that requires this in
the regulations. The agencies are forced to live with Congressional
mandates, in the form of law. BUT, I am not sure of ll the ins and outs
of this issue.

Well, John, feel absolutely free to give'em my name and number.
We fully realized that Social Security was housed in the same bldg.
By shutting off the entrances to HCFA alone then EVERY
ONE could have exitted. Yes, it is unfortunate that some of you
were minorly inconvienced temporarily. Unfortunately, lack of available
attendant care coupled with astronomical nursing home costs have resulted
in disabled persons sueing and winning the right to disconnect from life
support systems. Loving parents, realizing their offspring would be
forced into goverment financed and supported warehouses have taken the
lives of their loved ones then committed suicide. Your heirachical boss
Sec. Louis Sullivan has refused numerous written requests to meet with
ADAPT (the main funding source) to discuss a common sense dicersion of
25% of funds now imprisoning persons in nursing homes into an increase in
Nation wide attendant service programs directed, by the persons (such as
me) requireing attendant care. Our intent is for a few days to focus the
spotlight of this country on the need for attendants. For the record a
decison was made by YOUR bosses not to arrest in the hopes we would dry
up and go away. WE WILL NOT!
Our motto is ADAPT OR DIE!

Walter, I can well agree with your position. But it is your friendly
congressman and senator that vote these measures into law. Start
Patitions, call them, but the daylighjts out of them, visit them. They
can make the change. Sullivan can only recommend. It would be nice if he
did, but you can recommend yourselves. Look at the advocacy grout the
blind has in congress. What they want, they get a fair hearing and a
good chance of approval.
Regards, John

John, we do all the sweet things also. You are no doubt aware that the
three days (2 in Woodlawn, 1 in DC) were, indeed, symbolic. It's not
that Sullivan could not help but he remains adamant. We do bug our
Senators and Rep's. BUT there is a hard corp in HHS that are so far in
bed with the nursing home industry. All we really want is a 25%
diversion from the abominable incarceration of nursing homes with out any
definite "sentence". We will also be at the Presidents Committee on the
21-24th in Dallas. With our financial state (nationally) reallocation of
that 25% to community care will allow many to remain in their home!
