I've been looking in to getting online TL> with some database service, and reading the newspaper that way. TL> The cheepist service I've found so far wants only 40 dollars TL> an hour to be online, boy for that kind of money, I think I'l TL> forget about reading the news. The Washington Ear, the Radio Reading Service that is located in Silver Spring Maryland, and serves the Washington area, is planning on putting up a telephone dial-up service. They are now saying that it should be next September when it goes on-line. There will be a monthly subscription fee, about ten dollars I believe, which is still cheap as long as it is a local phone call. There are now three such services, Flint Michigan, Minneapolis-St. Paul area, and Albuquerque, New Mexico--the one I started when I lived and worked there. So, if you have any questions about them, ask away. ... David Andrews -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!129!89!David.Andrews Internet: David.Andrews@f89.n129.z1.fidonet.org

TL> 2. is the complete newspaper available, or just parts of it? TL> 3. If there isn't one in my area, how might I start one? There is not one in the L.A. area and I don't know if anyone is making plans. There is no one to my knowledge. The entire paper isn't availalbe, but most of it. In albuquerque, everything was done except clasified ads and legal notices. We did all ads, display ads and smaller ones too. To start one mostly takes money and a place to house one. It would take between $30,000 and $40,000 for equipment and probably a minimum of $75,000 per year for operating funds to run a decent one. Both those figures could go higher depending on number of phone lines, number of papers recorded etc. If you are serious, write me at the following and I will send you some information: David Andrews National Federation of the Blind National Braille and Technology Center for the Blind 1800 Johnson Street Baltimore, MD 21230. ...
