You can get more information about IBM Screen
Reader from IBM, or from an article in the Journal Of Visual
Impairment, which AFB puts out.
Personally, I wouln't recomend it, but to tell you
the god's honest truth, I haven't gone through the whole
manual, or really gotten into PAL.
If you want the article, I can probably get it free
fro you here at the college, because AFB will charge.
Tell me what mediums you can use if you want it, and
I'll see what we can do.

Hi John:
You have to have a PS/2, or you can get the adapter card and use
normal equipment. The PS/2 has a mouse port built in, and the adapter
is essentially a mouse port. The adapter comes with a driver so you
essentially just run the same stuff plus the adapter driver and you are
set up with out changing hardware, sorry I can't type today, I just got
out of bed and am on my way to work.
Call 1-800-426-2133 and ask about Screen Reader, or ask for Walt
Dean.
Screen Reader is not really the easiest program to get used to in
the beginning, but it is wonderful after you learn the ins and outs.

JL> Hello everyone. I need to use your technical knowhow. I am
JL> attempting to purchase a speech package that will not be too
JL> expensive. All I need it to do is read the screens to me.

You might want to consider PROVOX from KANSYS, Inc. It is small, 28K,
relatively inexpensive, $295.00 and relatively easy to use. It is particularly
strong when used for on-line work, as it interfeers less then most of the
others.
Call 800-279-4880 for info and/or a demo disk.

WS> Well, it still was shareware, and therefore didn't cost as
WS> much as provox, and are you saying that provox is never
 WS> updated?

It has been a while since PROVOX has been updated, and it badly
needs one. as I think about it I would probably only recommend it
to those who are heavily into using a modem, or who are having
problems tracking a cursor etc., on a network, two of its
strengths. Its maker plans on upgrading it this summer, but like
all software projects, it will get behind, so will probably be the
fall.

MD> David, a while back, NFB had a book reviewing different speech
MD> programs, etc. Could an update be done perhaps?

While this project is not something I am champing at the bit to take on,
anything is possible. My reluctance comes because of the sheer complexity and
magnitude of the project. Further, I think all the programs have gotten better,
so many of the differences are subjective, the type of interaction you prefeer.
We shall see!
