When people ask you questions or make statements you think are stupid,
consider the sourse. don't get angry, what will that get you? Turn the
situation into something positive. Why should a blind person go to a
movie? Describe a scene you saw in your mind the last time you went to
the show. I did that after watching, oops, hearing Dick Tracy. I
described the scean where Madonna is putting the make in poor Dick. I
described so perfectly what I imaganed that the listener swore I had
actually seen it. We both walked away feeling good. We have to contend
with misinformation broadcast by people looking for sympathy or trying to
sell something,eg. Catarac eye clinics would like you to believe you
would be worthless without yoour vision. A local charity advertises that
they teach people who are blind to eat, shave and brush their teeth. You
and I know better because we have to wear those shoes, but what about Joe
Public? He has no idea what it is like to be blind. What else can they
do but believe what they see and hear. So show them, but do it in a
positive manner, you will do more good for you and them

Hi Diana,

One of my closest friends now was someone who came up and started
asking me questions. My initial reaction was, "Oh no, not another
one." But after her curiosity was dealt with, we talked about all
sorts of other things and we are now good friends. So your point
is well-taken.

I get a little tired of the stupid things that seem to go on where I am
concerned, but I try to smile. So many things have happened to me and
Venture that I am writing quite a large book about them and I have been
careful not to relate anything here that will be in the book.

Also look at it another way. When I ride the bus, it is a daily
happening. How other people have so much to look forward too. I'll
admit, sometimes it does get to be a little too much, but think of
people no one ever notices or speaks to or even knows exists. One thing
I am not and that is lonely. I just wish sometimes I didn't have so
much going on but you know, there are millions of people both blind and
sighted who would love to be in that position.

I would guess that you are right about judging a stupid question. The
person who is asked the question must decide but I have to tell you I
really wonder about some of the people out there.

I attend a word processing class and to catch the bus home I have to
walk across a freeway over passand that actually means crossing an exit
of the freeway. It sounds a little scary, but if you pay attention, it
is really very safe. Last week, Venture and I were crossing the exit
when this car came barelling at us. Venture jumped back the fool
screamed around the corner and I thought "Oh wow!"

I was certain I was in the right and proceeded on to the bus stop.
However, a policeman happened to see what happened, and he stopped the
car. I could hear them, and tried to keep a straight face. I was
certain I was right, and I was delighted that the police saw him. You
know how they're never around when you need them.

This guy really rubbed the officer the wrong way. He didn't have his
driver's license-- I am unsure that he even had one, but he didn't have
it then. He had run out to pick up a sandwitch for his friend and he
was going to be late for work. When the officer asked if he had seen
me, he said that he had but that he was in a hurry and besides, it was
just a blind person and they shouldn't be allowed to cross a busy
intersection like that anyway.

I didn't actually hear all this, the officer came over and asked me if I
were all right. He wanted to know if maybe I thought I should see a
doctor or maybe the dog should see a vet. The car did come very close
to us, but we were both all right, and I was afraid he was going to keep
me from catching the bus. Never mind that he inturrupted my using the
BNS.

I think that guy may have a lot of explaining to do to the judge. The
officer got my name, and I had to submit written info. What a pain.
When I left, the bus driver said there were three units at the scene,
and the guy was yelling and screaming and his face was so red,she
wondered if he might not have a stroke. I was glad to get out of there.
