Larry Skutchan just posted on GEnie some product information about ASAP,
the software/hardware speech system from Computersmith in Louisville.
I'll try to put it into a more compatible format and upload it here as
a message. It looks unbelievable but interesting, and they are
apparently now taking orders for $750.00.

The DoubleTalk has its problems, but it would trade it in any day
-- tat is I would trad the SSI 263chip any day for the DoubleTalk!
A new algorithm is expected from SmoothTalker, -- tat is,
First Byte Software --- soon which should make things sound much
better.

I've been reading lately on Genie's visually impaired section of their
disability bulletin board how great a program this new Asap from
microtalk is. People are raving about it, but the number there is
smaller than the numbers of folks using this echo. I'm an artic user,
but not really thrilled with the new release, since it's so different
from the old one and the tech manual is so poorly writen. This asap
sounds a lot simpler and lot more dumby friendly. That is, if you're not
a computer genius, you can use a lot more fprograms right from the
start. Anybody got anything bad to say about the program? Or good, for
that matter, although I've been reading pley plenty good already. Also,
if you aren't on genie, you might consider it. It's not too expensive,
and the dia disability bulletin board is free of connect charges, unlike
compuserve.

one of the things that asap seems to do is to read things that are
writen directly to the screen where as none of the others seem to dothis
I found this out when trying to get Jaws to work with somthing and
then switched to asap anf to my suprise asap worked and jaws didnot
this was a one in a moillion user aplication but none the less asap
rose to the acation. I am yet to see anything work as well with Q
edit as asap.. this is out of the box without writing any config files.

MO> Hi David. Since you are officially in the technology and
MO> software evaluation business, and Isee you say you have been
MO> recommending asap or vocalize, I'm wondering if you can give
MO> your 2 cents worth about asap. I've heard glowing reports about
MO> how wonderful it is, but then have also heard a couple say it
MO> isn't really all it's cracked up to be, requires command line
MO> configuration, doesn't do all that well with some things , such
MO> as pc tools and others. So, what's your opinion?

Do I get change back from my two cents, if I don't give you your
money's worth? Initially I was very impressed with ASAP. In many
ways, I still am, but not as much. Yes, if you want to change
things you either need to do it on the command line, use batch
files or make changes through review mode. It does work better
with some programs then others. I think it probably needs six more
months to settle down. Ultimately, I suspect programs will use a
combination of configurations and smart screen processing. It may
be doing it a favor to call it artificial intelligence.

I recently spent an afternoon with ASAP and WordPerfect and found
it a little slow and tedious. It does talk a lot and held me up
some. It does work with the spelling checker, but talks a lot. I
need to read the manual again and see if I can fine tune. It might
be great for beginners and can be of real assistance at times.
Time will tell.

It also worked very well with Dbase IV but not well with Paradox 3.5.

MD> I think the more synthesizers Larry supports with ASAP, the
 MD> better.

I have tried ASAP with the Sounding Board and an Artic SynPhonix card. While
they work, ASAP does not use quite all of its features as well as it did with
the Double Talk PC. In particular, the temporary silance command did not work
at all, and this is a nice command. It allows you to scan down line by line.
If you are serious about using ASAP, you should probably invest in a Double Talk
PC.
