Index Number: 15776 [This is from the Silent Talk Conference] Steps to Empowerment January 2, 1991 marked the third D.E.A.F. meeting. This time the focus was on self-empowerment. Four speakers covered various aspects of empowerment. Once again there were over 200 persons attending the meeting. This shows that there is considerable support for what D.E.A.F. envisions and hopes to achieve. Dr. Nancy Eldredge gave an informative presentation on steps to empowerment. She expounded the process which socially oppressed minority groups experience as they strive for social equality and self-determination. James Womack shared his experience as an African-American growing up in the South during the 1950's. His account explored how personal attitudes influence the degree in which a person will achieve self- empowerment. Annette Reichman spoke on her experience in her field of work. She shared the process she went through which she learned to become self- empowered. It was a very interesting transition. Steve Nover recounted how he helped to make self-empowerment happen among the Deaf Community in Massachusetts via political activism. It was a thrilling account that showed what is possible for Deaf Arizonans. Steve showed what Deaf people are capab le of when self, socially and politically aware. -- Uucp: ..!{decvax,oliveb}!bunker!hcap!hnews!300!14!James.Womack Internet: James.Womack@f14.n300.z1.fidonet.org
