Index Number: 15807 Just done reading a copy of the News Release and it indicates good news but not as good as I was led to believe when I did my previous post.. the following is excerpts from the release.. Tucson, Az, may 16, 91 - Researchers sponsored by MDA announced today that they have located the position of the gene responsible for one form of ALS.. The international research team reported in todays issue of the New England Journal of Medicine that the Gene for FAMILIAL ALS is located in a certain region of Chromosome 21, one of 46 rodlike structures containing the human genes, the basic units of heredity. This finding holds tremendous promise for everyone affected by ALS, said MDA VP and Ex Dir Robert Ross.. The MDA team, headed by Dr. Teapu Siddique, used a method called linkage analysis to find the Chromosome holding the ALS gene. Siddique was formely at Duke Univ and now is Assoc Professor and Dir of Research at the Dept of Neurology, Northwestern Univ Medical School in Chicago. This method allowed us to "Link" known genetic segments, called markers, to a region where the gene we're seeking is located, Siddique said. After checking more than 100 markers, the researchers found four markers on chromosome 21 that were linked with the ALS Gene, he said. Although most cases of ALS are not genetic, understanding genetic causes may lead to more knowledge about the protein malfunction behind the disease, Siddique said. Location of the Chromosome area where the ALS Gene resides is a vital step in eventually isolating the gene itself, said Dr. L. Stern, MDA Research Dir. The study wasbased on tissue samples from 23 families world wide affected by the genetic form of ALS.. As you can see, we are not directly affected by this release but it is a start and hopefully something good will come out of it for you, Patrick , me and all other ALS Folks.. hang in..
