[misc.handicap] Closed Captioning De-Coder

I am 22 years old and have been losing my hearing for the
last eight or so years (cause is as yet undetermined) and I've finally
reached the point that even when I'm weaing my hearing aids, I can't
understand didly-squat that is being said on the TV (and lip-reading the
TV is somewhat...how shall we say...undependable?).
I was wondering if someone could please help me find out how to get
a closed captioning de-coder (I think that's what it's called) for my TV.
I really don't have any idea where to go to find one. I am a *STRUGGLING*
college student and am primarily looking for one that is affordable and yet
of at least decent quality (in other words, I don't want to have to buy
another one in a year).
I'm also interested in a visual alert type of system that will
let me know when someone is knocking on my door (I just moved out on my
own and never realized how hard it is!) or when the phone is ringing. I
assume that there is a catalog of some type that has all these types of
things in it, but the question remains.....HOW DO I FIND OUT ABOUT IT?
Thanks in advance for your help. Oh yes....by the way....e-mail
is preferable because my access to USENET is somewhat sporadic.

Decodes can be bought at Sears. They can range anywhere rom $120-200 dollars
depending on where you buy them.

If you have some type of organization in your state, usually named
something like, Dept of Hard of Hearing or whatever, you should contact
them. They will be able to tell you where to get alarm systems in your
state for the phone and doorbell and such. There is a place in
Hackensack, NJ called "Phone TTY" that sells all of the above equipment.
I think they will ship to you to and they are more reasonalby priced than
other places. The phone number 201 489 7889.

Lisamarie, there is an ad in the current June/July issue of "VOICE"
offering the TeleCaption 4000 decoder for $159.95 plus s+h. This
is the best price I've seen lately. It's from:

   Closed Caption Video Service
   Building F, 115 Route 46
   Mountain Lakes, NJ 07046

They're also offering a "buy one - get one free" deal on captioned
video movies, and will throw in a free video movie if you buy a
decoder from them.

The TeleCaption 4000 decoder is widely available elsewhere for
around $180, and NCI has been offering a $20 rebate but I'm unsure
if that is still available.

Also, I hear that Zenith expects to have TVs with built-in decoders
available by year end. Soon the built-in decoder will be required
on most TVs. If you do not care to invest in a decoder you might
be able to borrow one.

... Jack.
