Index Number: 16105 [This is from the Blink Talk Conference] I am now entering my sophmore year at Boston College. Thus far, my university has paid for the costs of brailling, which are quite high. For example, I just submitted a statistics textbook, which I will need for a summer course I am taking. It needs to be completed by July 25th, or thereabouts. We need at least the first nine chapters. Now, guess what price I was quoted, for the university to pay. Well, we'll keep you in suspense for a few sentences!!!! A little background first, I called our local volunteer organization, and they said the job was to big. I also checked with some other people, to see if another transcriber could be found, at a lower price, but was advised that most likely not. What was the price??? Five thousand three hundred seventy five dollars, and zero cents!!! This price is from Braille, Inc., and as of this posting, that is what we are going with. I entered the name of the book into APH/CARL, which is now accessible via a computer network. No luck, not even an earlier edition of the book. Also, RFB does not have it, although using a stats book on cassette would be very difficult. I'm also going to check with the National Braille Association. Anyway, to get back to the subject line, the Coordinator Of Physically Challenged Students has researched braille, with some locals. He has yet to find any other college students, other than me, that want, or have used braille. If anyone out there has wanted, or used braille, would you please write a short little account of your situation, why you used braille, who paid for it, what courses, etc. This would be for college only.
