I have a friend who has severe cerebral palsy. He is in a nursing
home because he does not have any family to take care of him. He
has been there since he was 21 years old and his mother died. He
never knew his father. Anyway, he will now be 40 years old on July
1. He cannot use his limbs in any way, except his right hand slightly.
He is bored bored bored because he has nothing to do and has such

a bad speech problem that people don't want to take the time to figure
out what he is saying. I forgot to tell you that his body is just
about useless.....but his brain is as sharp as anyone's you would
ever know. He has developed this function because I guess it is the
only one that works. He is trying to get out of this nursing home
and get into the federally funded housing for the disabled but he
is still bored bored bored. He would love to have a computer so that
he can correspond and talk to people. he loves people. Just a plaint
XT computer would do, with a modem. Does any orgainization help out
in a situation like this. He is on SSI and only gets 30.00 dollars
a month spending money....By the way, his name is Richard Lee Brown
and he lives in the Owsley County Nursing Home in Booneville, Kentucky
41314. He loves to get mail to so drop him an encouraging line.

Hi. I mailed your friend Richard Lee Brown a postcard today.

Concerning his getting a Personal Computer (PC) and modem so that he can
participate in message echos like this one, I'd like to point out that he
would also need a phone/data line and communications software. I'm pretty
sure that there are free communications software packages--think they're
called "public domain" software, or "freeware." HIs local public library may
have a collection of these.

What you might want to do is post your request on a personal computer echo.
Also, I recommend that he or you contact a local PC club. When I visited one
a few years ago, the members were a very helpful group! Such a club would
probably have a library of freeware or know where to find one.

I was thinking that maybe a little publicity via the local news might turn up
some resources for Richard.

Would Richard need an aid to help him operate the PC? I have seen a variety
of aids featured on tv news programs so I know that they exist.
