There is a resource center for disabled Catholic
people. Here is its address and executive
director:

Mary Janes Owens, MSW, Executive Director
National Catholic Office for Persons with Disabilities
401 Michigan Avenue NE
Washington DC 20017
202 529 2933

The purpose of this national office is to promote equal
participation of disabled persons in the Catholic
environment. Mary Jane Owens is blind, hearing impaired
and uses a wheelchair. She herself is a bit of a
remarkable person. She attended Gallaudet University
for a while and has been the editor of Perspectives,
a publication on public policy and disability access for
the President's Committee on Employment of Persons with
Disabilities. Her mission as national director is to
help make Catholic environments accessible in an array of
ways. One would be to have braille, tape and large print
in every Catholic environment. Another would be to have
TDDs in every Catholic church, school and facility.
Another of her ideas is universal architechure accessibility
of all Catholic facilities by the year 2000. Her staff
has an array of information concerning camps for disabled
Catholic children and adults in the summer to resources
for disabled adults who desire to listen to tape recorded
Catholic bible studies. There are local offices of her
administration in every archdioscese in the country.

This is a remarkable resource for Catholic disabled persons.
Their new director is also a rather remarkable lady worth
knowing. Write to them and ask for their materials and
information. You may be surprized at what exists.
