I'm interested in acquiring a portable ramp which I can keep in my
van, and use where there are no curb cuts, or to get up small
flights of steps. Does anyone use one of those? Where would I
find one, and how does it work? I'd like a one piece thing that
folds. *adh*

I have one. Forget the maker, but I can look it up for you. It is 6
feet long, folds in half, has handles and weighs about 25lbs. Just unfold
and lay over steps.
Regards, John

I have a portable ramp. I carry it with me in my van. Folds up to fit
in back. Extends to approximately 6 feet I believe. I do not use it very
much anymore except when visiting someone who lives up steps. Was a
necessity when I got out of rehab as I could never have gotten into my
parents home or my girlfriend's. They are made of lightweight aluminum.
But hold onto your hat------ they cost about $175 and that was 7 years
ago.

Yes, portable ramps do exist. I have seen people using it. The last
one I saw were 2 steel things (they looked like shallow troughs to
me) anyway they were collapsable. So you took them out of the case,
expanded them (sorry it's 6:50 in the morning and my spelling skill
has not woken up yet, it usually does not do that until 2 in the
afternoon. <smile>). You have one trough for each wheel, so when
you put them on the curb or small step you have to make sure they
are the same distance from eachother as the wheels are on your
wheelchair. In Ottawa you can borrow them for 2 weeks periods from
DPRC (Disabled Person's Resource Centre), you can also rent or buy
them from stores that sell wheelchairs.

I have a portable ramp that someone sold me before I was able to get a lift
for my van. They had said it was just the key to make me completely mobile.
The ramp I have is about 30" wide and 5-6 ft in length, and is made out of
fibreglass. Has raised lip alone each edge that is to help keep you from
running over the side.

The ramp is alright for going over a curb (although my scooter will go up
a 4" curbine), is incovnenient dragging the thing along behind. Is never
around when u need it. The length of the ramp is to short for being of much
assistance for handeling stips.

I tried to use it to go in/out of my van for a while (is a 1 ton model), and
was less than satisfactory, because of it's short length. Scooter didn't have
adequate power to handle the incline for entry, and exit was hair-raising.
A 1 ton van is kind of high, and the short ramp....was like a ski-jump. I
still have it around here somewhere, but haven't used it in
gosh-donno-how-long. Wasn't as good as it was cracked up to be for my use.
