MO>NFB doesn't oppose the use of dogs, although Iunderstand that they used
MO>to do so. Ken Journigan was apparently quite unalterably opposed, and
MO>even, in the past, made statements about a person being lead around by a
MO>dumb animal. But that position has been changed now for several years.
MO>NFB had a guidedog users division.
NFB may not be opposed to the use of dogs anymore, but at their last
convention there were a total of 3 guide dog users. Some of the non-dog
users attempted to make us feelout of place or like we were stupid for
trusting dogs. I mostly ignored it, because otherwise it was a nice
convention.

Nancy, I am sure you are referring to a state convention when you mentioned a
convention with three dog guide users? 'cause, national conventions have a
bunch. I'm sorry--and I don't wanna know where you're from--but that state is
behind the times--NFB nor individual dog users would approve of making dog
guide users feel out of place.

well the orientation center for the blind here in california used
to discourag guide dogs but were sued into allowing them. when i
was in b e p training here in california, they stated to me that
you would never get a location if you took your guide to the
interview

Index Number: 16383 There were unquestionably more than three dog guideusers at the convention last year -- I know for a fact that there were at least ten. I have never felt out of place or looked down upon at an NFB convention, gathering or meeting because of my dog guide. I like dogs and feel more comfortable traveling in the city with one -- people tend to leave me alone, except for when they want to pet the dog. Also, I am a fast walker, and was told to get a dog guide because I kept overstepping my cane in high school in my impatience to walk briskly. I do not know how NFB's leaders feel about our dog guideusers, but I sincerely doubt that any seriously committed member of NFB is going to waste his or her time fretting about another's choice in mobility. Dr. Jernigan is not a petty man, and does not waste time, words and/or effort on such insignificances. -- | Poor is the person whose permission | Christine Faltz 33 Prospect Ave. | | depends upon the perceptions of others | Princeton, NJ 08540 | "Who is John Galt?"
