Hello Scott,
Just wanted to tell you I finally got over to my good friend
Janis' house to view your 3-D graphics using animator and
super VGA. It was really exciting! This new technolgy is
absolutely breathtaking! :-)
I see you had 2 approaches, one totally developed with
animator and another having used a scanner. Each have their set
of benefits, so I'm not sure which would be better to go with.
The animator hand is great for clarity. There's no question what
the hand is doing and what, in turn, the student's hand should be
doing. But I was thinking...when you have to incorporate a body,
a second hand, and a face, which is essential in showing most
signs, it may difficult to do in that mode. Maybe not, that
animator is an amazing tool.
What the scanned images lack in clarity (comparative only to
the other as they are clear enough really, just not as
3-dimensional) they make up for in realism. What could be more
realistic than a photograph of someone doing it, and then that
being animated, wow! Also your model could easily enough
contribute his/her face and body when needed... well, lots to
think about here.
Just wish that level of technology were more prevalent, and
also the amount of memory needed were more available. My school
computers have VGA (they're PS/2's) but regular density 3 1/2 inch
drives, which my friend said still wouldn't have enough room to
hold the files. But then the day will come, when this technology
will become more commonplace, and by that time perhaps, you'll
have the program all put together, with those graphics. What
langauge do you think you'd write it in? I guess you've seen the
structures I've used in my basic form of it...
Well thanks again for letting me capture a glimpse of whatcha
got so far development-wise --it's pretty exciting! :-) Also good
luck, let me know how you progress.

Fran, I am glad you got a chance to see the animation. In the near future I
am shure we will see CD's on most computers, once this happens we will have
plenty of room to put animations of the compleet ASL vocabulary one one disk.
In addition to the signs we will have sound to help teach us hearing people.
There is a display at Microsoft that allwas inpressed me. It is a stack of
floppy disks that stands about 5 feet high, on top is one CD. It shows a
fantastic improvment in storage capasity.
